Tennova Healthcare - Newport Medical Center Receives Gold Level Achievement Award from Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care
12/9/2024
Newport, TN [December 9th, 2024] — Newport Medical Center was one of 8 hospitals to achieve a gold level achievement. This achievement consisted of active project participation, including huddles and coaching calls, monthly outcome and structure data capture, data-driven QI work, clinical change implementation, and reaching the state goal of <23.6% NTSV cesarean delivery rate and <23.6% NTSV cesarean delivery rate after induction of labor for at least 2 of the previous 6 months.
In early 2023, Newport Medical Center joined TIPQC and 34 other hospitals throughout the state to begin decreasing the cesarean rate to 23.6% in the birthing population presenting with nulliparous, term, singleton, and vertex (NTSV) pregnancies to align with the Healthy People Goal of 2030. Cesareans are one of the most popular surgeries in the United States despite being associated with an increased risk of hemorrhage, infection, uterine rupture, and longer recovery time. After more than 18 months of hard work, the Promotion of Vaginal Delivery project moved into sustainment in September 2024.
Decreasing cesarean rates takes strong leadership, coordinated PDSA cycles and collaboration. Throughout these past 18+ months, teams worked relentlessly to decrease the number of unnecessary cesareans, and further improve care for Tennessee moms and babies.
"At Newport Medical Center, we are committed to providing exceptional, patient-centered care for every mother and baby. Through evidence-based practices, collaborative efforts, and a focus on empowering both patients and staff, we have not only met but exceeded state goals,” says Scott Williams, CEO Tennova Healthcare - Newport Medical Center. “This success reflects our ongoing commitment to improving maternal health outcomes and ensuring that each birth is as safe, supportive, and personalized as possible. We are proud to lead the way in advancing care for Tennessee families."
Newport Medical Center announces the success of its NTSV (Nulliparous Term Singleton Vertex) project, achieving a mean cesarean delivery rate of 17% in the NTSV population. By implementing evidence-based practices such as Spinning Babies techniques, encouraging freedom of movement during labor, and providing comprehensive education for both staff and patients, the hospital has empowered shared decision-making to prioritize safe and supportive birthing experiences. Newport Medical Center remains dedicated to ensuring personalized, compassionate care for every mother and baby. Expectant families are invited to choose Newport Medical Center for their next birth and experience its patient-centered maternity care.
