Physicians Regional Medical Center is recognized as leader in stroke care
KNOXVILLE, TN (December 6, 2016) – Tennova Healthcare has once again earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.
Physicians Regional Medical Center in Knoxville underwent a rigorous onsite review on October 17, 2016. Joint Commission experts evaluated the medical center’s compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements including program management, the delivery of clinical care, and performance improvement.
“We received excellent on-the-spot feedback from the survey team, and we have received notification that Physicians Regional Medical Center has been recognized by The Joint Commission for thoroughly demonstrating an advanced level of commitment to the care of stroke patients,” said Douglas Stofko, D.O., neurosurgeon and medical director of Tennova Neurosciences. Dr. Stofko has been instrumental in steering the accreditation process for the health system.
Stroke certification recognizes Tennova Healthcare as a leader in stroke care, providing a higher standard of service for stroke patients in East Tennessee.
“Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States,” Dr. Stofko said. “On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes. At Tennova, our network of hospitals is committed to offering aggressive early intervention, progressive treatment, prevention and education, and rehabilitation services.”
Tennova Healthcare offers emergency stroke care at its seven hospitals in the region. In addition to Physicians Regional Medical Center, both North Knoxville Medical Center and Turkey Creek Medical Center have been awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers. In September, Jefferson Memorial Hospital received Advanced Certification for Acute Stroke Ready Hospital by The Joint Commission.
“We are pleased to be recognized by The Joint Commission for our commitment to quality stroke care,” he said. “Advanced certification provides us with the opportunity to highlight the exceptional care and support we offer our stroke patients and their families, and encourages us to continually strive to advance our care even further.”
