Health system selects Clyde Wood from Tennova's Morristown market for leadership role at Knoxville hospital
KNOXVILLE, TN (February 23, 2016) – Tennova Healthcare has named Clyde Wood as chief executive officer of North Knoxville Medical Center in Powell, effective March 14. Wood has been serving as chief executive officer at Lakeway Regional Hospital in Morristown since February 2013.
Wood also served as chief executive officer at Tennova Healthcare – Volunteer Martin, and Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett, Missouri. He has held other administrative roles at hospitals in Louisiana and Missouri.
“I am very excited about this new opportunity with Tennova Healthcare,” Wood said. “I look forward to working together with the outstanding doctors and the other talented healthcare professionals at North Knoxville Medical Center to further expand and enhance patient care services.”
During his tenure at Lakeway Regional Hospital, Wood steered several capital improvement projects and equipment purchases, such as extensive renovations to the medical-surgical and intensive care units. He successfully recruited primary care and specialty physicians to the medical staff, including orthopedic, urology and family medicine physicians. Under Wood’s leadership, Lakeway Regional Hospital has experienced positive gains in both employee and physician satisfaction over the past three years.
“As a highly respected member of Tennova’s leadership team, Clyde is a great choice for this position,” said Neil Heatherly, chief executive officer of Physicians Regional Medical Center and Tennova Healthcare’s East Tennessee market leader. “Tapping Clyde for this role also speaks to the deep bench strength that Tennova has developed in the East Tennessee market.”
“We feel very fortunate to have found someone to lead North Knoxville Medical Center from within the Tennova network,” added Dr. James Griffin, an internal medicine physician and chair of the CEO Interview Committee at North Knoxville Medical Center. “Clyde has the right combination of experience and skills to make a positive impact on the quality of care we provide to patients and families in this community.”
Wood started his career in healthcare as a licensed physical therapist. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri; a master’s degree in physical therapy from Washington University in St. Louis; and a master’s degree in health administration from Missouri State University in Springfield. Wood also served in the United States Army Reserve for eight years.
“As chief of surgery and now chief of staff at Lakeway Regional, I’ve gotten to know Clyde very well over the last few years. He has developed excellent physician relationships, which have led to both outstanding patient care and high physician satisfaction. Our hospital is better in so many ways due to his leadership,” said Dr. Michael Dillard, an otolaryngologist and chief of staff at Lakeway Regional Hospital.
Tennova will immediately begin a national search for Wood’s replacement in Morristown. “Clyde’s departure certainly leaves big shoes to fill, but we are confident we will attract the right candidate to advance the hospital’s mission,” said Danny Houseright, director at Morristown-Hamblen Emergency Medical Services and chairman of the board at Lakeway Regional Hospital. Until a permanent successor is identified, Steve Simpson, associate chief executive officer at Tennova Healthcare – Lebanon, will serve as Lakeway’s interim chief executive officer.
