Newborns at Tennova Healthcare Hospitals to Receive Handmade Red Hats to Mark American Heart Month

Hats knitted and crocheted by volunteers to be distributed at Physicians Regional, Turkey Creek and Newport medical centers
KNOXVILLE, TN (January 25, 2016) – In recognition of the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts program, Tennova Healthcare will be delivering red hats—knitted and crocheted by volunteers—to babies born at its hospitals during February. The Little Hats, Big Hearts program raises awareness of heart disease and specifically congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.
“Congenital heart defects can impact both the structure of a baby’s heart and how it works,” said Sudha Nair, M.D., an obstetrician and gynecologist with Tennova Healthcare. “The causes for congenital heart defects are not completely known.
“Some babies have these defects because of changes within their individual genes or chromosomes. There is also some evidence to suggest they may be caused by a combination of genetic and other environmental factors, such as the mother’s diet, her health conditions, or her medication use during pregnancy. Although medical care and treatment have advanced, it is important that mothers-to-be are aware of the possible causes, and they should take precautions to avoid them,” Dr. Nair said.
The Little Hats, Big Hearts program will kick off at a special celebration in the East Entrance Lobby of the Women’s Pavilion at Turkey Creek Medical Center at 9 a.m. on Monday, February 1. The event will feature an honorary red hat presentation and remarks by Dr. Nair, chairman of the Obstetrics Collaborative Committee at Turkey Creek.
